Why rereading your notes feels productive and teaches you almost nothing

THE SHORT ANSWER

Rereading and highlighting build fluency — the sense that material is familiar — without building the ability to retrieve it later. A systematic review of ten common study techniques rated both as low utility. Retrieval practice and spaced repetition rated highest, and both feel harder while you are doing them.

The comfortable techniques lose

A team of cognitive psychologists reviewed the evidence for ten widely used study techniques and rated each for usefulness. Highlighting and rereading — almost certainly the two most popular — landed in the lowest category. Practice testing and distributed practice landed in the highest.

The gap is not small, and it is not new. It has been reproduced for decades. The interesting question is why the losing techniques remain so dominant.

Fluency is not knowledge

Material that is easy to process feels like material you have learned. Psychologists call this fluency, and it tracks how smoothly words go in, not whether you could produce them tomorrow.

Rereading maximises fluency. Every pass is smoother than the last, and that smoothness is interpreted as mastery. Highlighting does something similar with less effort: it produces a visible artefact of work and a strong feeling of engagement, while the actual cognitive demand is close to zero.

The result is a specific and dangerous combination — confident and unprepared.

What works instead

Retrieval practice

Close the book and try to produce the material from memory. Students who read a passage once and then tested themselves outperformed students who read the same passage four times, when assessed a week later.

Pulling something out of your head is not just a check on what is there — it changes what is there, strengthening the route back to it. That route is exactly what you need under exam conditions, in a conversation, or at the moment you actually want the knowledge.

Spacing

Take the same total study time and distribute it instead of massing it. A meta-analysis of over 250 studies found distributed practice reliably beat cramming for identical total time.

The mechanism is related: letting a little forgetting happen makes the next retrieval harder, and harder successful retrieval strengthens memory more than easy retrieval does. Researchers call these desirable difficulties.

Why nobody does the effective thing

Both winning techniques feel worse. Self-testing generates errors, which feel like evidence of failure. Spacing means arriving at each session having partly forgotten, which feels like going backwards.

Your in-the-moment sense of how well learning is going is close to useless here, and frequently inverted. That is the single most important thing to take from this literature: distrust ease specifically.

A ten-minute version

  • Read something once, properly.
  • Close it. Write down everything you remember for two minutes.
  • Check what you missed. That gap is your actual knowledge.
  • Repeat the same two-minute exercise tomorrow, then in three days, then in a week.

Is highlighting bad for studying?
It is rated low-utility on its own because it creates familiarity rather than recall ability. It is not useless if you use it to mark what you will later test yourself on — the failure mode is treating it as the whole strategy.
